What's "markup" you may well ask. According to
googles dictionary it's one of four things, here we mean the fourth, which is "A set of tags
assigned to elements of a text to indicate their structural or logical relation to the rest of the
text".
Markup in terms of a web page is a bit more than text that you can see and read, it includes all the
content.
Here's what W3C say about their tool:
"This validator checks the markup validity of Web documents in HTML, XHTML, SMIL, MathML, etc."

JavaScript Code Quality Tool |
JavaScript is widely used across the web, it is reasonable to say that most web sites employ
JavaScript in some form or other. For those new to web programming, JavaScript can be thought of as
executing client-side, meaning the actual code is included in the data that is sent to the user’s
browser from the Web Server, along with the other HTML code for the web page.
This tool, JSLint, is used to check the quality of Javascript code, it "will hurt your feelings"
they warn.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO |
SEO is the term used to describe the process of improving the prospects of a web site being listed in search results.
Ideally this is being listed for search terms that are most relevant to the content of the web site. To give an example, if your web site was all about Fish food, then you would want the search engines to list your web site as close to the top as possible for a search term of "tell me about fish food". As close to the top of the list so that people searching are likely to see the listing before other pages that are maybe less relevant to their search.
